Matthew Cleaveland, a doctoral student at the Penn Research in Embedded Computing and Integrated Systems Engineering (PRECISE) Center, took up running during the pandemic to get outside and boost his health. After spending four months training for his first marathon, Cleaveland faced a major setback: he was diagnosed with cancer and needed immediate surgery.
