Abstract

With the advent of high performance storage, content delivery network (CDN), adaptive IP streaming, advanced compression, and broadband networks, Video On Demand (VOD) technologies and services for cable systems and broadband Internet have evolved significantly in recent years.  These advances enable the delivery of large amount of content to multiple devices of large number of subscribers in scale with increasing capabilities.

This presentation will discuss the next generation Video On Demand architecture and several recent advances in Control/Data Plane and Content Delivery Network.  In addition, the benefits and challenges of adaptive IP video streaming technology will be discussed.

Speaker Bio

Weidong Mao is currently Senior Fellow in Technology and Product at Comcast Cable.  He is driving the technology and architecture for Video On Demand, Cloud TV and DVR, Content Delivery Network, and Advanced Compression.  He is the lead author of the Next Generation On Demand (NGOD) specifications that have been widely adopted by various U.S. and International cable operators. He has been active in a number of standard and technology initiatives.

He has more than 20 years of experience in digital video and cable industry.  Prior to joining Comcast, he was Chief Architect at Liberate Technologies, a provider of digital TV software platform.  Previously, he was co-founder and CTO of MoreCom.  He served as Director of Telecommunication Unit of Motorola, where he developed the interactive headend system and digital set-top box.  He was Senior Member of Research Staff at Philips Labs where he has developed MPEG-2 compression standard and products.

He received M.A. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 1991, and B.S. in electrical engineering from Peking University, Beijing, China in 1986.  He has 15 awarded patents and numerous publications and presentations.  He is a member of SCTE, SMPTE, and a Fellow of IEEE.
