Successful Earth orbit satellites require many complex interactions to be engineered correctly – both interactions among vehicle subsystems and interactions with the launch and mission environments. Increasing demand for cost-effective vehicles to fly more and more involved missions drives a need for modularity and interoperability. This talk discusses two general problem areas where research is needed and details some specific problems and approaches in those areas, as well as indicating some new problems that are on the horizon.
